Recently there have been reports of a sensational move of Cristiano Ronaldo returning back to Old Trafford and reuniting with former team mates such as Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and not to mention fellow countryman Luis Nani. Although there have been other reports of CR7 signing a long-term contract extension with Real Madrid, nothing has been confirmed.

This rumour has been going on since the winter transfer window when Manchester City apparently put in a bid for the star and Ronaldo responded saying that he respects Manchester United too much and Sir Alex to do such a move unlike a certain Carlos Tevez. But this rumour has only solidified when Real Madrid put in a world record bid of £85m for Welsh star Gareth Bale, It is understood that Ronaldo feels if Bale comes to the Bernabéu, he would not be the star attraction at Real Madrid. Both PSG and Manchester United were the main clubs pursuing after the Portuguese’s signature at the start of the summer transfer window but Paris Saint-Germain ended their chase for Ronaldo after buying Edinson Cavani from Italian club Napoli for £50m making it the 5 most expensive transfer of all time. Manchester United have yet to sign a big player this season, only buying a pretty unknown defender. The time to sign Ronaldo is running out, with just a couple of weeks left till the transfer deadline. But this time last year Sir Alex had basically brought no one in and the bought the best striker in the Premier League, Robin Van Persie and what a signing he was.

If Ronaldo does come back to United, it’s not like he’ll get a bad reception. He’s one of the best players to ever have worn the United shirt, and is also part of the magnificent 7s, players who have worn the infamous number 7 shirt with people like Eric Cantona, David Beckham ,Michael Owen and of course George Best in the club. Having someone like him in the squad could benefit everyone at the club, he can form partnerships with players like last season’s top scorer, Robin Van Persie. Also with Ronaldo being such an experienced player, he can teach and help the younger players how to handle the pressure of being at such a big club, as when he joined from Sporting Lisbon he went through the same process.

Arguably, the development of Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the biggest things to happen in Sir Alex’s managerial career, buying the 18-year-old Portuguese winger for a mere £12m for Sporting Lisbon and then 6 seasons later, after 118 goals for the club and also officially becoming the best player in the world winning the Ballon D’or in 2008 he joined spanish giants Real Madrid for a world record fee of £80m. Giving Manchester United a profit of over £65m on Ronaldo and giving Madrid a huge upperhand in European football.

The picture above shows Ronaldo’s performance in La Liga last season. What Ronaldo provided for Real Madrid last season is exactly what United need, a strong dominant force in midfield that hasn’t been in the United team for quite a time even more so now that Paul Scholes has retired.

And today is was announced that Antonio Valencia has given up on the no7 shirt and gone back to his old 25 jersey. Maybe this could be the ultimate sign for CR7’s return? Only time will tell.
